Project Stingray - 3D Scanning | Reverse Engineering | Design


A project does not necessarily need to be “survey” related for us to complete. Take for example our latest reverse engineering/Design job, a 5.5’ wing span UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). Our client has thousands of hours designing and perfecting their first prototype for a carbon fiber beast of a UAV. Our task was to take their design and smooth out all of the imperfections into a 3D CAD model to preserve and recreate the integrity of their design. This model will then be used as to create a mold to mass produce the craft.

The plan was to scan the best wing of the craft and mirror it in CAD creating a perfectly symmetrical shape. Utilizing our in house climate controlled scan room, we were able to successfully scan the UAV and create an extremely accurate pointcloud. From there the pointcloud was brought into numerous software packages and then exported to 3D CAD file. After completing the model, a meeting with the client revealed some enhancements and additions to the original design. We were then able to incorporate them into the model thus giving them a true and complete design of all their hard work.
